Climate change
As one of the leading steel manufacturing companies of India, JSW Steel recognises its role and responsibility to minimise its contribution to climate change. The Company aims to address the environmental impact of its operations with a strategic and long-term approach.
“JSW Steel is working towards becoming a world-class organisation that is known for integrating business with environmental protection and supporting the less privileged sections of the society, while ensuring a high level of ethics and transparency in corporate governance. We have made consistent efforts to improve our resource efficiency, especially when it comes to water. This is evident from the encouraging trend of our specific water consumption over the years. We are confident that our technical efficiencies and stringent adherence to sustainable practices will also help us reduce carbon emissions substantially.”
Mr. Partha Sengupta
President - Corporate Services
JSW Steel is shifting towards better technology and processes to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions for every tonne of steel produced. Over the years, a number of initiatives have been taken to improve the energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions across the manufacturing units. In FY 2018-19, these initiatives have led to a substantial reduction in direct emissions and an increase in energy savings. Some of the key initiatives are as follows:
JSW Steel also incorporates social and environmental considerations while developing products. Key examples include:
JSW Steel also contributes towards combating climate change even at an individual level. JSW Steel, in partnership with the Times of India, organises the Earth Care Awards, which honours the selfless protectors of our planet. It recognises and rewards people and organisations that have taken extraordinary initiatives to reduce emissions and to protect land and water resources.
Combating climate change
India has pledged to do its bit in the fight against climate change. As the integrated iron and steel manufacturing industry contributes a substantial portion of the total GHG emissions in India, JSW Steel has devised a strategy to help reduce emissions in accordance with the norms.
A few initiatives taken at JSW Dolvi Works in this regard include:
Environment management systems adopted
Air management
Mangrove Conservation Project, Dolvi
As a voluntary measure, JSW Steel initiated a three-year mangrove restoration project in October 2016, aiming to benefit 7,817 fishermen and farmers. Restoration of mangroves strengthens the embankment, thereby ensuring that saline water does not ingress into the farmland. Mangrove ecosystems also provide habitat for fauna, sequester carbon, remove water pollutants and protect coastal areas and agricultural fields against cyclones, wave impacts, sea upsurges and coastal abrasion.
Since FY 2016-17, a total of 7,12,377 mangrove saplings have been planted.
